Connecting People | May is Better Hearing and Speech Month!

Communication is the most important ingredient in any relationship. Those who can communicate effectively are happier and tend to have successful relationships, whereas those who don’t aren’t so lucky. But what if you could enhance your communication skills? That’s where hearing aids come in. Recent studies have shown that wearing a hearing aid makes it easier for a person to understand others and be understood by them. This means a better relationship for you and your spouse!

Untreated hearing loss makes communication difficult, and it may be affecting your relationships more than you realize. You don’t talk to your children as often as you used to, and your marriage is also hurting. You still take turns emptying the trash cans and walking the dog, but something is missing. Have you given any thought to your hearing health?

This month is Better Speech and Hearing Month.

If you’ve been concerned about your hearing health, This month is an excellent time to take action. The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) devotes an entire month to promoting awareness about communication problems such as hearing loss and minimizing associated stigma. They encourage everyone to look at their health and determine whether or not they have a communication disorder. This year, Better Speech and Hearing Month’s theme is ‘Connecting People’, so take a moment to consider your hearing health and how it affects your relationships.

Living with untreated hearing loss can isolate you from your friends and loved ones and put walls between you and those you care about the most. You’re likely to be dealing with anxiety and despair, while your loved ones are disappointed and angry that they can’t speak with you.

What hearing aids can do for you

Make spending time with your family more effortless.

Sitting silently at family gatherings because you can’t keep up with or hear all of the chatter isn’t the answer. Hearing aids will give you the assurance that you can be right in the middle of everything and spend quality time with your family. If you have trouble hearing your spouse and frequently ask, “What was that?” you might imagine how much they would welcome hearing aids if you started wearing them. Spending time together will be more fun for both of you, and family gatherings will be more enjoyable for all.

Restore your conversations.

You can regain your ability to hear and converse successfully by wearing a hearing aid. It should come as no surprise that this will significantly improve your relationships. You can chat on the phone and hear what the other person says without turning up the volume, straining to hear, or asking for clarification. When you’re in person, you can hear without asking individuals to repeat themselves, and you don’t have to waste time guessing what was said.

Improve relationships

Hearing aids have been shown in several recent studies to improve relationships by reducing stress, eliminating misunderstandings and disputes, and facilitating communication. Indeed, 70 percent of all respondents who have hearing aids report that their relationship has improved while wearing a hearing aid.

Improve brain health

Your mind is a really resourceful place. That’s fantastic in most cases, but it also means that when your hearing deteriorates, your brain will no longer consider it necessary to preserve. The auditory parts of your brain, which receive and process sounds and speech, will deteriorate over time and become less effective. Hearing aids allow your brain to be activated by sound once more, which benefits brain health as you age.
